per·cus·sion  n. the family of instruments in which sound arises from the striking of materials with sticks, hammers, or the hands

A variety of percussion instruments are used in the Salem Blue Devils Percussion Ensemble. In general, they are divided into two major sections: the "front ensemble" (also known as the "pit") and the "marching battery."

The "front ensemble" is typically located in the front and center of the performance area and is comprised of instruments such as Xylophone, Marimba, Vibraphone, Timpani, Electronic Keyboard, Concert Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Gong, Suspended Cymbals, and more.  These instruments sit on stands and remain stationary during the performance.

The "marching battery" is a mobile unit consisting of Marching Snare Drums, Multi-Tenor Drums, and Tonal Bass Drums.  These instruments are carried by the marching performers using specially designed harnesses.

All instruments used by the ensemble are provided by the school and will remain at the school when not in use. Students are encouraged to purchase practice pads and/or keyboards for practicing at home.
